Real Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini has said that Antony wanted “revenge” following his struggles at Manchester United.
Antony endured a disastrous spell at United after his 86m move from Ajax in the summer of 2022. He was unable to live up to his hefty price tag, managing just 17 goal contributions in 96 appearances.
He lost his place under Erik ten Hag and was unable to break into Ruben Amorim’s plans, prompting a loan exit in the January transfer window.
The Brazilian has enjoyed a dramatic change in fortunes at Betis, where he has been one of the best players in La Liga since his arrival.
Antony has notched nine goals and five assists for Los Verdiblancos since joining them. His contributions were crucial in helping the side finish in sixth place in the table and reach the final of the Europa Conference League. They will face Chelsea on Wednesday.
Betis are believed to be keen on making Antony’s stay a permanent one but the 25-year-old is also attracting interest from the likes of Atletico Madrid, Real Sociedad and Juventus.
Antony recently opened up on his struggles at United, revealing he would at times go for days without eating and occasionally found it difficult to play with his son.
Ahead of Betis meeting with Chelsea, Pellegrini spoke to the media and divulged details of a conversation with Antony, where the winger confided in him that he wanted revenge on United.
Pellegrini said [as quoted by Daily Mail], “I can be proud of helping Antony.”
“He told me he was not playing at Manchester United and was not happy. He wanted ‘revenge’ and to show what he can do.”
“It’s difficult with a 100m price tag. Antony is a very good player. I am absolutely sure that this is a huge time for him to continue improving his career.”
Antony was recalled to the Brazil national team after a lengthy exile.
