Two Manchester United players experienced defeat with their countries as the international action continued on Saturday.
James Scanlon made his 11th cap for Gibraltar as they opened their World Cup qualification campaign against Montenegro.
The 18-year-old forward played 83 minutes from the start at the Stadion Kraj Bistrice, before being replaced by Liam Walker.
It started well for Scanlon and his team-mates as Dan Bent gave them a 13th-minute lead but Montenegro came from behind to win 3-1, with former Manchester City striker Stevan Jovetic among the goals. Scott Wiseman’s side will hope to get their first points in Group L against the Czech Republic on Tuesday night.
Ahead of the break, James – who received a maiden first-team call-up for the Europa League quarter-final second-leg win over Real Sociedad – met with our Supporters’ Club in Gibraltar.
Elsewhere, Victor Lindelof’s Sweden suffered a shock 1-0 defeat in a friendly against a Luxembourg side ranked 92nd in the world rankings – 65 places below them – as Seid Korac’s 23rd-minute goal proved decisive.
Victor was an unused substitute at the Stade de Luxembourg so Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak – who was partnered in attack by former United forward Anthony Elanga – took the captain’s armband.
Our no.2 and his team-mates will hope to regain some pride when they host Northern Ireland in another friendly on Tuesday.
There could be as many as six Reds taking to the field for their nations this evening (Sunday).
Portugal – with Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot in their ranks – take on a Denmark side with Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu, Christian Eriksen and Rasmus Hojlund in their squad, in the second leg of their UEFA Nations League quarter-final in Lisbon.
Elsewhere in the competition, Matthijs de Ligt’s Netherlands face Spain at Valencia’s Mestalla Stadium.
