Manchester United Women defender Lucy Newell has been called up for the Young Lionesses ahead of the upcoming UEFA Women’s Under-19 Euros.
The 18-year-old was part of Lauren Smith’s side back in March for qualifiers against Belgium, Austria and Ukraine, appearing in all three games, which were won resoundingly by the Young Lionesses.
Newell has now earned a spot for the main tournament in Poland, which is due to commence on Sunday 15 June, with England getting their adventure under way in a 16:00 BST kick-off on that day against the Netherlands.
Portugal and Spain complete Group B, who the young England side will face on 18 June and 21 June respectively.
Meanwhile, Group A contains Poland, Sweden, France and Italy. Whichever sides made it through the group stage will be working towards the showpiece final on 27 June at Stadium Rzeszow.
The tournament has been held annually since 1998 and was hosted by Lithuania last year, where the Young Lionesses made it to the semi-finals, before being ejected by Spain.
England last won the competition in 2009 under manager Mo Marley, where they didn’t lose a single match throughout qualifying or the finals, conceding only one goal.
Newell signed her first professional contract with United in October 2024, joining training camps with Marc Skinner’s squad in Malta and Marbella as she works towards her first-team debut.
During the 2023/24 campaign, Newell played a key role in our Under-21s title-winning side, earning the Women’s Academy Players’ Player of the Year award in the process.
In January this year, Newell joined Championship side Blackburn Rovers and became a key part of Simon Parker’s side, helping them retain their status in the division and later being shortlisted for the Barclays Women’s Championship Rising Star award last month.
