“Don’t do that”: Gary Neville warns “honourable” Amorim not to repeat mistake he made in Europa final debacle

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has advised Ruben Amorim not to shoulder the club’s long-running failures, following the Europa League final debacle earlier this week.

United fell to a 1-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur, confirming a trophyless season and ruling out any involvement in European competitions next term.

The Red Devils could finish as low as 17th in the Premier League, having suffered 18 defeats, nine of which have come at home.

It has undeniably been the club’s worst ever season in their modern history, and this is something Amorim did not shy away from in his post-match presser after the Europa League final. The Portuguese coach told reporters that if the board and fans no longer want him, hes willing to step down without seeking any compensation.

However, a subsequent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS still have faith in Amorim and their concern is on backing him in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Speaking on The Overlap US, Neville addressed Amorim’s statement that he is prepared to quit, insisting that the United head coach should not do that again.

“Ruben Amorim is so honest in his press conferences, to a fault actually. How can you say to a manager dont be as honest. I think hes fantastic. However, dont offer yourself up, dont offer yourself up ever, Ruben, dont do that.”

“Im talking as a 50-year-old who, at times, has thought thats the right thing to do. Hes very young and hes saying the admirable thing. Dont offer yourself up, tell us how youre going to drive a bus through that dressing room and how youre going to fix it. Focus on that.”

“Stop offering yourself up, stop doing the honourable thing, the reasons youre losing and the club is failing is a series of things that are not all down to you. None of those players are yours, apart from Dorgu, you didnt sign any of those players.”

“If in a year and a half, or in a year’s time, we’re talking about a couple of transfer windows, and you’ve made some significant changes to that squad, and they’re starting to become your team and we’re still playing the same way, then obviously at that point he knows he’s going to be in trouble.”

“But he didn’t want to take this job, he didn’t want to take this job partway through a season. And what happens when you’re a young person is sometimes, you say ‘No, I’d rather come at the end of the season.’ But you take a job in your life sometimes because you get swayed into it and you think you’re going to miss the opportunity or you’re doing it for a different reason, or you just end up folding and basically sort of giving up and saying I’ll do it.”

Neville also responded to an interview Luke Shaw did, where the England international claimed that he and his teammates must question whether or not they’re good enough to play for United.

Neville said about this, “Luke, it’s not your job to determine that, the manager will determine that.”

“When the players are starting to come out and question publicly whether they are good enough to play for the club that you know how bad it is internally there. Imagine what they are saying inside.”

“If you can feel people having a [negative] influence over others, I think you have to wipe it out. You’ve got to wipe out every single player in that dressing room who doesn’t believe that they have got total and utter confidence to play for that football club.”

“The club is eating them alive, it’s too big for them and someone’s got to get a grip of that club and I think it has to be the manager Ruben you’ve got to get a grip of that club.”

Neville emphasised that United’s Europa League final defeat was the result of a decade of mismanagement and poor decision-making. He explained that United’s errors have finally caught up with them and it will take a monumental effort to get back to the top.
