Manchester United’s pursuit of Viktor Gyokeres has received a major boost as the price Sporting CP will sell their star striker has been slashed to £55 million, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Gyokeres, 26, has established himself as one of the deadliest forwards in Europe across two impressive seasons at the Estádio José Alvalade after joining from Coventry City in 2023.
The Swedish international has scored 96 goals and provided 28 assists in just 101 games for Sporting. This season he has 39 goals in 33 league games as he has propelled Leões to the Liga Portugal title.
But it was under Ruben Amorim – who swapped Lisbon for Manchester in November to replace Erik ten Hag – that Gyokeres really found his groove as a leading striker. And it’s exactly this type of player the Portuguese coach is now lacking at Old Trafford.
The dismal form of the attack has crippled the Red Devils this season. Only four teams – Everton and the three relegated sides, Ipswich Town, Leicester City and Southampton – have scored fewer times than United in the Premier League.
The senior striking partnership of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have combined for just seven goals between them.
A new number nine is considered an urgent priority at Old Trafford and Amorim is believed to be keen on a reunion with Gyokeres. There is an acceptance at Sporting that their star player will depart this summer and they will not stand in a way if a suitable offer arrives.
It had been though that a package worth around £65 million would be required to secure Gyokeres’ services. And with a host of reinforcements needed for Amorim to continue moulding the United squad, this price would have presented the Reds with an issue.
But Romano now reveals it will take just £55 million (€65m) to get the “green light” from Sporting.

With every penny counting at Old Trafford this summer, a £10 million drop in valuation for a key target is a significant boost for United.
But it will also have put rivals, domestically as well as on the continent, on red-alert over an even better price for one of Europe’s best goal-scorers, with Romano stating “discussions with top European clubs continue.”
Next week’s season-defining clash against Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final will likely prove key to United’s pursuit of Gyokeres, as victory in Bilbao will provide entry into the Champions League next season and the huge financial boost the competition brings.
